Wildlife Crossings Save Money—and Lives
Utah sees around 7,000 deer-vehicle collisions annually, costing taxpayers nearly $138 million in vehicle damage and injury each year. Luckily, research shows that overpasses and underpasses with associated fencing can reduce those collisions by up to 90%. But first, they have to be funded. While wildlife crossings are sometimes included in larger road projects, Utah needs dedicated funding—funding that would accelerate the construction of projects when and where they are needed. Guest opinion: Killing us softly...
by Dr. Ellen Brady
Roberta Flack’s hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song” could easily be used as this administration’s theme song, except the title more accurately should read “….With My Policies.” RFK Jr’s recent visit accentuated the need to highlight the devastating impact of this administration on the health and very lives of Utahns, Americans, and all humanity.
Coverage of RFK’s visit focused on Utah’s bans on water fluoridation and certain food additives in school lunches, as well as restrictions on SNAP use for certain items. The scientific merit of those measures can be debated--dental associations uniformly support water fluoridization as an effective way to prevent tooth decay. However, many other administration policies will undermine individual access to health care and damage public health infrastructure, thereby risking lives--locally, nationally, and around the globe. Let me elaborate. (Read More)

USBE issues letter to U.S. DOE outlining compliance with Title VI, Civil Rights laws
Earlier today, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) issued a letter to the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) in response to a request from the DOE regarding state compliance with Title VI and related diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) regulations in schools across the state.
On April 3rd, the DOE gave all State Education Agencies in the United States 10 days to sign a letter assuring that their state’s public schools are in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (the DOE’s deadline was later extended to April 24th). Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race in programs receiving federal funding. The DOE’s letter also noted that certain DEI-related activities could be considered noncompliant with legislation. (Read More)
